Even though the attendance by Churchill voters was, IMO, paltry, last night's Meet the Candidates evening at the BCA was certainly a success by at least two measures--enthusiasm of the crowd, and deliciousness and abundance of cookies donated by BGC and BCA members. It was also a wonderful outreach program by our BCA, especially in combination with the other community meet-'n'-greets they've sponsored and are planning.
Nancy Carpenter, Margie Darbut, Kathy Nelson, Jeanette Trauth, and Jen Suiters added to the colorful spread on our refreshment table. Thank you to all of them, and to last week's donors: EJ Foster, Jen Suiters, Jeanette Trauth, Emilie Freese, Tara Taylor, and Wanda Hughes. Wanda is a proud member of both the BGC and the BCA and her brownie bites were one of the highlights of the Penn Hills event. Thanks also to Maestro Dirk Page, who was both the brains and the brawn of the operation, Jen Suiters, Ceil Greber, and all of the other BCA board members and neighbors who helped with the evening.

As I mentioned last week,as part of the BCA's 501c3 endeavor, we are conducting two "Meet the Candidates" sessions as a public service, and Ceil and I are coordinating refreshments. Thank you to BGC members EJ Foster, Emilie Freese, Tara Taylor, and Jeanette Trauth who helped us last week with cookie donations for the Penn Hills event. We got rave reviews! Jen Suiters and Wanda Hughes from the BCA also sent cookies!
The next event is this coming Tuesday, May 2 for Churchill Candidates, at the BCA, from 6-7:30 pm. I'm looking for a few more donations of cookies this week. I do have some left over from last time, which I froze, so I'll need a bit less than last week. Please let me know if you can help, and I'll make arrangements to pick up the cookies. Thanks again!! Thanks again, members!! jad Ladies and gentlemen, as part of the BCA's 501(c)3 endeavor, we are conducting two "Meet the Candidates" sessions at the BCA as a public service, and Ceil and I are coordinating refreshments:
1. Penn Hills Candidates - April 25 (6:00 - 7:30 pm) 2. Churchill Candidates - May 2 (6:00 - 7:30 pm) I'm looking for donations of cookies, decaf, tea, cups, napkins, plates, sugar, creamer, etc, from Blackridge neighbors, and I know that our BGC members are good citizens, so I hope some of you will be able to come through for one of both of the evenings. Please let me know if you can help, and I'll make arrangements to pick up the cookies. Thanks again!! jad New Member Special: Joining the BGC is only 35 dollars per year, and the membership year normally runs from the beginning of July to the end of June, but if you join us now, we'll give you a couple of bonus months--from the time you join up until July of 2018.
If you're interested, leave a comment here, and we'll take it from there! Thank you! Hi all,
As usual, we are slow to get reservations(63 so far) for this annual event and ONLY fundraiser for the corners! The corners costs may not diminish as much as I had hoped since we have fewer and fewer volunteers to work on the gardens so I have to employ Tom Fossick to help do chores. That said, your support is key in making this another successful event. You may be on the fence about attending, and if you are, you should know that we will not hold a Benefit next year. I have family commitments (2 children marrying this year) that will prevent me from organizing one. SO if you are thinking maybe you will skip this year and go next, please reconsider as you will not only miss out a wonderful evening, you will have no Benefit next year. I know life interferes and family comes first. So for everyone who can't come this year for one reason or another, we will miss you but totally understand. For those on the fence, PLEASE hop off and come. Reservations are officially due Friday but will be happily accepted over the weekend. Thank you for supporting the Benefit and many thanks to those of you who have already contributed to the wine and spirit fund. Marlene is still accepting donations for the raffle tickets also. The BGC will be participating in a new fundraiser this year that Penn Hills Lawn & Garden is sponsoring for local garden clubs. It's called "Grow Some Green for Your Garden Club in 2017," and the guidelines follow. Darcy Kennedy of PHL&G will be attending our executive board meeting at the BCA at 10:00 AM on February 20 (before our regular meeting and lecture at noon) to provide more details and to answer questions. If you'd like to attend, please contact Nancy Del Presto.
The Blackridge Garden Club invites members, friends, and neighbors to our program, Pruning: the Kindest Cut on Monday, February 20 at the Blackridge Civic Association Building. Network with your neighbors and friends at 12:00 noon; enjoy a light lunch and our presenter, Sandy Csikari, a Penn State Master Gardener, will speak at 12:45 p.m. Sandy writes "Pruning is one of the least-understood aspects of gardening, and yet is critical for a healthy and attractive landscape. Knowing when to prune can be just as important as knowing how to prune. When done correctly, pruning can rejuvenate overgrown trees and shrubs, increase plant vigor, and improve appearance. Proper formative pruning also gets young trees and shrubs off to a good start, resulting in healthier and more beautiful assets in the landscape. This class will cover tools, safety, and pruning techniques for trees and shrubs." As a light lunch will be available, we need a tentative count of persons who plan to attend. Invite your neighbors to join us at this informative session. Contact Marlene Dolecki at madolecki@verizon.net or 412-841-5005 by Monday, February 13, to make your reservation. Members and guests will learn more about future Blackridge Garden Club activities including the March Bloomin’ Corners benefit. Members are encouraged to bring a monetary donation for the March Benefit “Wine and Dine” Basket; member contributions are used to purchase a gift card for the PA Wine & Spirits store. We recommend a donation of at least $25.00, which is roughly the cost of a nice bottle of wine or spirits or a pack of craft beer. With gift cards to a variety of local restaurants included in the Wine & Dine Basket, this raffle prize choice is always very popular. Hello Blackridge Garden Club friends,
Just a reminder - if you plan on joining us for the Blackridge Garden Club Holiday Tea, and have not yet responded, we need to hear from you. Join us for tea, light fare, Christmas cookies and the chance to offer holiday wishes to your Blackridge Garden Club friends. It is planned on Tuesday, December 6, at 12:00 noon at the BCA building. Contact Ceil Greber, by Wednesday, November 30, at ceil.greber@buntinggraphics.com or 412-247-5828 if you are able to join us. Hope to see you there. Marlene Dolecki Hello Blackridge Garden Club friends,
What a difference a day makes! Friday it was a balmy 74, perfect for that last minute garden clean-up, and today a hot cup of tea hits the spot. What’s nicer than a cup of hot tea on an early winter day? The answer is tea, light fare, Christmas cookies and the chance to offer holiday wishes to your Blackridge Garden Club friends. Please join us for the Holiday Tea Party on Tuesday, December 6, at 12:00 noon at the BCA building. To borrow from a popular song, "the weather outside may be frightful, but the company of friends is delightful." Hope that you can join us. Contact Ceil Greber, by Wednesday, November 30, at ceil.greber@buntinggraphics.com or 412-247-5828 if you are able to join us. Marlene Dolecki Hello all,
We've heard from several of you regarding reservations for the Saturday, November 26 Holiday Wreath or Centerpiece Workshop by Laura Schoch, Blackridge neighbor and Phipps Display Horticulturalist, but many have not responded. As Laura is ordering the wreath and centerpiece materials in a day or two, we want to give her an accurate count. Please call me at 412-841-5005 if you want to join us. Also let me know if you wish to make the live centerpiece OR a live wreath - Laura needs to know how many centerpiece hurricane globes to order and how many wreath forms. Remember that this activity will take place the Saturday afternoon right after Thanksgiving; several persons have asked if they can invite family members who may be in the that weekend - the answer is yes! It's a great way to start your holiday decorating and visit with friends and family as you work. The outcome is your own, hand made, beautiful wreath or centerpiece. Please call today if you plan to join us. Marlene Dolecki |
