Adrienne O'Toole has pointed out the obituary of former BGC member Connie Pommer, who was a valued member of the club for many years when she lived at the end of Atkinson Place, before moving to Penn Hills. Her Post-Gazette obituary is here, and is reproduced below. We offer our deep sympathy to her family.
POMMER, CONSTANCE AUDREY HARRINGTON-HOWARD "CONNIE" Connie Pommer, 87, of Penn Hills, passed away quietly in her sleep early on Wednesday, July 06, 2011. Known as "Mima" to her grandchildren, she was born in Cardiff, Wales September 11, 1923 to a naval ship's captain, Archibald Harrington-Howard and his wife, Adrienne Karakotch. While serving as an air raid look out, she met and married the late Andrew J. Pommer during World War II in London and worked with him at WABCO (now Wabtec) in Wilmerding, PA for many years, moving into the home they built and lived in for 51 years. Siblings include Laura Mardis, married to William, the late Muriel Donelson and the late Harold Howard (wife Audrey, of California). Her family includes two daughters. Daughter Virginia Pommer Cavanaugh is married to Terry Cavanaugh; mother and stepfather of grandchildren the late Todd Aubrey Gladstone, Jeffrey Whitehill Gladstone, and Katherine Constance Gladstone-Klein, married to Jens Klein and parents of great-granddaughter Maya Todd Klein; daughter Sandra Pommer Jackley is married to David B. Jackley; parents of grandchildren Jessica Erin Jackley, married to Reza Aslan; and Adam David Jackley, married to Katie Long Jackley, parents of great-grandchild Selah Rose Jackley. We remember Mima as the feisty, proper British lady with the beautiful accent, who lived on her own and kept up a cherished flower garden until a few weeks ago. She relished any-occasion family gatherings and chips and dip. She doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren, her parrot "Jamie," her collections of Hummels and fine figurines, and would cheer us all with her "yahoo!" during moments of great fun and jokes. Connie will be sorely missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the New Community Church, 3100 Wexford Road (Rt 910 at Pierce Mill Road), Wexford, PA 15090. No visitations will be held. We suggest memorial donations to American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. Arrangements entrusted to TRENZ FUNERAL HOME, INC. Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb

It was great to have a chance to chat to fellow BGC member EJ Foster this morning while I was watering Collins, and I also had a chance to wave to member-to-be and tour host Katie Werner. I'm no David Kissell, but I snapped these shots below. Members, please send me any shots you have of your corners, of your gardens, or of cool things you've seen at nurseries, at arboretums, and on vaca. I'd love to share them on our blog. |
