Good morning, members of the Blackridge Garden Club, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens cordially extends an invitation to your organization to attend the annual Native Plant and Sustainability Conference on Sat., Oct. 15 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This one-day opportunity brings together national experts, landscape professionals and local gardeners to engage in meaningful discussion on plants, landscapes, and our roles as environmental stewards. The event will take place in Phipps’ Special Events Hall and includes presentations, lunch and a book sale. Topics of this year’s conference include: •Design with Natives: Incorporate native plants in your landscape design in a variety of styles, from Mt. Cuba and beyond. •Deer and the Invaded Woodland: Exotic plants are invading native landscapes, and humans aren’t the only culprit of this change. Learn how deer are changing forested ecosystems and backyard woodlands, and how you can help to maintain regional biodiversity. •Creating Pollinator Friendly Landscapes: Create a natural haven for pollinators in peril in your own backyard. Registration is required to attend. Reservations can be made by calling412/441-4442 ext. 3925 or by visiting the information page here. Registration costs $105 for Phipps members and $115 for nonmembers. Price includes coffee, light breakfast items and a lunch buffet. We very much hope that the Blackridge Garden Club will join us for this exciting and educational day! All the best, Carley Adams Marketing Assistant Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Hey boys and girls, our official hashtag for the benefit, and well, heck, for all of our events this year is #Blackridge2016, so please use it when you post your pix on social media! Thanks!
We are making our annual request for BGC members to donate to the Drink and Dine raffle prize for this year's benefit. Marlene Dolecki is collecting contributions. We would prefer a monetary donation, and suggest an amount equivalent to a nice bottle of wine or spirits. Marlene will accept your checks (to Blackridge Garden Club) or cash at the February 24th meeting, or you may contact her at madolecki@verizon.net or 412-841-5005 to make arrangements. Thank you!!!!
I've been taking some time to update our website, and one of things I've always wondered is what our BGC founders meant by "native crab apple" as our club flower. I took a few minutes to look around and I think I have it narrowed down to these two, but I'm really not sure. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?
All, This weekend is the first cleanup of Beulah Road. October 3rd at 8:30 at BCA. Vests and equipment provided. Refreshments offered after the cleanup. It has been my experience that we have fewer and fewer folks showing up to help each year. Unfortunately people continue to throw their trash out the car windows and there is always plenty of trash to pick up. If you have some handicap then you can always help by picking up around the BCA and corners. I am out of town this weekend and cannot help that always reliable, hardworking, longtime BGC volunteer, EJ Foster. PLEASE volunteer an hour of your time and show up on Saturday morning to help her. Surely this club can pitch in and work with her on this project that she has led for at least 8 years. Call EJ and let her know that you can pitch in....412-241-5955. Thank you, Nancy ALL
For those who did not attend the program on April 7th where we announced that we changed the plant auction to May 20th then you may be prepared to attend tonight, May 6. I am SO sorry that I let this announcement to you and the community slip through the cracks and fail to give you fair warning. It was felt, due to our cold winter that we would have slim pickings in our yards for plant donations. As mother nature always has the last laugh, this has not been an issue with so many 70 degree days. Oh well. Anyway, many apologies to any who made plans to attend tonight......hope you all can come on the 20th!!! Nancy Hi members!
As in years past, we are offering a raffle prize that is entirely sponsored by your generous donations. The raffle prize is the Drink and Dine raffle. Originally we had a Booze basket at our benefits and we asked the membership for donations of alcohol and with any cash we filled in around the donations. In the last 2 years we asked for cash donations only and then Adrienne used the money for a gift card to the state store. We changed it because we felt it was difficult for the winner to schlep all that booze home. Additionally, the winners probably won a lot of booze that they did not prefer. We have again modified this raffle prize! This year is it called the Drink and Dine prize and instead of one large gift card to the state store, we will split the money among 3 gift cards: state store, beer store and a fine dining restaurant on Mt Washington, Altius. If all the members donate $10-$15 each then we can create this awesome raffle prize!! In the past, Adrienne lead the drive for asking and collecting money for this raffle. I imagine she did so while walking the neighborhood with her dog!! In order to make it easy for you to contribute we have several fellow members to whom you can drop off the money/check (make out to Blackridge Garden Club).....Vicki Rodia, Tara Taylor, Diane Law, Judy Diorio and me, of course. If you are busy or can't get out, please contact any of us to pick up your contribution. PLEASE donate no later than Monday March 8th. That will give us a day or two to purchase the gift cards OR call to ask for your donations! The BGC very much appreciates your help in making this Picnic in Provence themed Benefit a success. Thank you in advance for your contribution. Hi all!
Just wanted to remind you that we have a luncheon program on April 1st at the BCA, with the theme of container gardens. Tuesday, April 1, 2014: Containers by Design 11:30 AM, BCA Gerri Barnes, Penn State Master Gardener, will teach us how to select plants and will offer techniques for maintaining healthy plants throughout the season. This should be a great program and a great springtime motivator as all of us have several pots on our deck/ patio/ in our yards, and to maximize their beauty and health is very topical! Please mark your calendars and rsvp to Diane Law at dianeelaw9@gmail.com so she and her committee can plan the luncheon accordingly. Thank you. Nancy I've been a member of the Blackridge Garden Club since 1999, and participated in some of their activities well before that time. I've met and worked with lovely people over those many years through my association with the BGC. If I had to single out one thing out of all of my experiences with the organization as having the biggest impact on me, as being the closest to my heart, and as being a true blessing in my life, it has been the opportunity to meet and get to know Lil Huguley.
We worked together on many projects, and I admired and loved her very much. She was smart. She was wise. She was talented. She was gracious. She was beautiful. She was funny. She and Neal created a wonderful family and a true partnership. I will miss her every day, and I will try to be more like her. I recently lost my mother, and chose this poem to share at her funeral. I'd like to share it again, in honor of Lil: Lessons Mother Taught Us She planted dill for swallow-tails and milkweed where monarchs would lay their caterpillar offspring round the grass green meadows of May. The migrants returned then as always; how quickly her crops were consumed! but countless chrysalides dotted the dell tucked inside their golden cocoons. Then early one morning she beckoned us watch the mystery unfold; the metamorphosis almost complete translucent shells gave up their gold. Wet wings greeted the rising sun and the warmth of a soft summer breeze, soon butterflies coloured meadow and wood floating gracefully throughout the trees. She told us of unseen transcendings as we watched the born-agains soar; so certain were we then of heaven as if we had been there before. J.D.
