We are disappointed to announce that we are going to take a break in 2020 from our popular May plant auction b/c we can't verify that the donations will be free of invasive Asian jumping earthworms, which we've seen in Blackridge. :( Please read this article and pay attention to the recommendations listed at the end.

Members and friends, thanks to those of you who have returned your Bloomin' Corners raffle tix! Good luck and I hope you win your favorite prize! If you haven't returned your tickets or donations, please remember to do so by Thursday. Our live drawing will be broadcast on our BGC FB at 10 am Friday. If you need more tix to buy or to sell, pls let me or Nancy know; we have some extras! These are really wonderful prizes, worth a minimum of 500 dollars each--and more importantly, you are supporting our prime directive--our corners! Thanks again! jad Thanks to Tim from Chapon's Greenhouse for installing our new "Cupressina" spruces at the Collins corners this morning, and to Chapon's for having the nice specimens to begin with! They are planted right next to the dogwoods we also purchased from Chapon's when we first redid those corners 7 or 8 years ago (in a drought!). We learned to carry lots of water that summer, and I've kept my handy dandy water buffalo for times like these!
Thanks also to those friends and neighbors who have supported our benefit through the years, which provides us with funds to maintain the corners and to be able to donate to other Blackridge organizations. I've already gotten one volunteer to help water our new trees for the rest of the summer. Any other takers? Ladies and Gentlemen: At the BCA on the evening of Wednesday, October 17, we will be sponsoring a lecture by arborist Jason Rihn from Bartlett Tree Experts, who takes care of the trees on our corners (saved them from bagworm just last season!!). Jason will present and take audience questions, plus I am going to invite members of the Churchill Tree Committee, who are working on policies to protect our beautiful local canopy to be present, to answer questions as well. We'd also like to include members of local clubs, such as the Churchill Garden Club and the Forest Hills Garden Club, to be attend. I thought maybe we could raffle off a tree or tree-related item, and serve treets! (Get it?? LOL) with the same theme (from trees or look like trees or sound like tree names or anything else fun--but easy!) AND--I am looking for volunteers to help with: invitations and graphics (leaflets?) setup and cleanup (log in early; leaf late!) treets and drinks (will be phloem freely!) greeting (be a bud!) raffle (it will be nuts!) anything I am forgetting (we can branch out!) Would you like to volunteer to help? (Don't be a sap!! Volunteer!) Do you have any questions, comments, or suggestions? You'll enjoy the fruit of our labor! THANK YOU!! jad Hi all,
I am sorry this is kind of last minute but I wanted to keep to a tradition of sorts and have a luncheon in June. This will not be a President's Luncheon but just an end of our program year, early summer luncheon. It will be at Longue Vue Club on Wednesday, June 13th at 11am. It will have a different format in that you won't be asked to pick an entree; it will be styled as a high tea luncheon. Several types of finger sandwiches will be offered as well desserts and tea and/or coffee. It will be in the newly redecorated "cocktail" room, the one where we have lunched before. It should be a fun, relaxing get together and I hope you all will consider coming . The best part is that it is FREE of cost. So please consider attending and let either EJ Foster know 412-241-5955 or Vicki Rodia at vfrodia@gmail.com, or 412-241-2829. If you have any dietary restrictions please let EJ or Vicki know. Please remember, no denim is allowed and if you need a ride to attend please let EJ or Vicki know. I hope you all can come!!! Nancy PS Historically we try to collect dues for renewing members (not the folks who just signed up....we know who you are:) at this meeting and the Garden Club board has decided to increase the dues to $35, a $5 increase from the past several years. So please bring a check if you plan on renewing your membership. Nancy Carpenter our membership chair plans to be there:) At least night's meeting, BGC VP Vicki Rodia distributed information about the invasive and destructive Lycorma delicatura, or spotted lanternfly, and asked us to be on the lookout here in Pennsylvania, where the Asian insect has become established .
Here is information from Penn State Extension to assist you in identifying and reporting this non-native pest, with the goal of restricting its movement and eliminating it from the Commonwealth. Here is a link to the article Vicki distributed at the meeting. Thanks to Paul Gamrat and the membership of the Churchill Garden Club for inviting us to their April program, "Gardening for Monarchs," presented by Roxanne Swann of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.
I had a pleasant time meeting and greeting the ladies and gentlemen of the CGC, and picking up and polishing my pollinator pointers. I posted other pix of the event here. Our dear former neighbor, clubwoman, and longtime community leader, Sue Fish, has passed away, and we are all shocked and deeply saddened to hear of it and send our love and sympathy to her family. Here is the link to her obituary. The BGC has sent a donation in her memory to the charity designated in her obituary. We love and miss you, Sue!!
Members, some of the family of our dear late friend and president emeritus of the Blackridge Garden Club and the Blackridge Civic Association will be at Neal's home (1036 Old Gate Road) on Saturday, March 10, 2018 from noon to 5 pm, and will have some keepsakes that they would like us to select from, such as gardening books, from Lil's collection. If you have any questions, or if you aren't going to be around that day, but would like a token to have, please email me, or give me a call at 412-241-5769. |
